My leaf Roger........aka when AIDS had a name and a face attached to it.

A leaf that dropped.......

The first time I remember being friends with Roger I was 19 years old.  He was 21 years old.  I had known who he was because we lived in the same town and we attended the same junior and senior high schools.  We belonged to the same church.  Even though we were not close friends because of our age difference I did know who he and his brothers were.
When I was 19 I came home from New York City.  I had been employed as a nanny for nine months.  At about the same time Roger came home from a 2 year mission for the Latter Day Saint church.
Right about this time, a new church program was being put into place called the Young Adult program.  Young adults from the ages of 18 until about 29 met together on Sundays for our church meetings and than we would get together a few times a month for fun activities.
Roger was fun.  His happy and positive attitude was contagious.  He was a very talented young man.  He had a lot of musical ability and he shared it with people.  Everyone loved being around Roger.  He is the type of person who couldn't have a single enemy in the world.
One thing I remember about Roger was the way he made you feel.  He made you feel like you were the most important person in his world.  The second thing I remember about Roger was he loved to dance. The movie Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta had just come out.  Disco dancing was the rage.  Roger knew all the dance moves.  We would meet together at the church and blare the radio and learn how to do all John Travolta's moves.  It was so much fun!  The last thing I remember about Roger was dancing the night away with him at a church activity.  I didn't even know how to dance, but, with Roger you really didn't have to know.  He made you feel like you could do anything on the dance floor with him as your partner.
A few years later all of our lives had moved on.  A lot of us were married now.  Some of us had children.  Roger had moved to San Francisco to work.  I had lost contact with him.  In fact, it would be nine years before we would hear about Roger.
One day our phone rang.  My husband had been close friends with Roger throughout their childhood and teenage years.  It was Rogers mom.  She was calling to tell us that Roger had died of aids.  He had been terribly sick and he suffered immensely.  Before he died, he helped plan his funeral and he wanted my husband to be one of the speakers.  It came as a complete shock to us.  Roger was only 32 years old and he was gone.
The aids epidemic was in the news every day at the time.  Famous people like Magic Johnson, Rudolf Nureyev and Liberace had aids.  Common people like Roger had aids.  It is a terrible disease that has taken many innocent lives as well as lives from people abusings drugs and abusing their bodies.
At the time, all I cared about was, it had taken my friend Roger.  One of God's sons and one of my best leaves (aka friends ).  It was a sad day for all of us who knew and loved Roger.
It was hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that someone I knew and loved died of such a vicious disease and that he suffered doing it. It has been 25 years now since Roger has died.  Twenty five years that I have had to live.
I think about Roger often.  I don't judge him or his lifestyle or the choices he made that helped lead to his death.  I miss him and I miss what could have been.  There is only one Roger.  Just like there is only one you and only one me.  We were each place on this earth to make a difference.  Hopefully, we are making a difference in someone elses life.
Thank you Roger for making a difference in mine.  Love ya fallen leaf!

My political debut.......aka what was I thinking?

Town Meeting for new Police Station

Last Tuesday evening I found myself at the local town meeting to decide whether or not our police officers need a new police station.  The previous police station was built thirty or so years ago back when K-town only had ten police officers.  K-town has grown considerably over the years and the police have grown out of their current building.  The police officers (  I believe there are 17 of them) work out of a trailer because there is not room for them in the police station.
Being that one of these fine men happen to be my sons I decided to write myself up a little speech on his and his fellow officers behalf.  I did not know what to expect at the meeting.  I heard it could get a little nasty and that people would be very opinionated.  Me, myself and I kind of like to stay away from controversy.  It can make me a little intimidated, but, hey I will go to almost any lengths for my children.  (inside joke, I will not unplug a toilet for any of them) lol.
Wouldn't you know that when I went up to give my speech no one was behind a certain woman.  I kept asking people if they were in line and everyone said no, not yet!  How did I end up behind the most opinionated woman in the room who told everyone she was no longer giving her support to the Police Chief.  Oh boy!!! and along came me after the cpas , the bank president, the police chief and the very assertive ...........I don't want to mention any names here.
So here goes it    uh hummm  My name is LeeLee.  I am a mom.  I do not have numbers for you, but, I do have heart.
In recent weeks we mourned with the citizens of Utah County as they lost one of their own Deputy Cory Wride.  Cory was a deputy willing to put his life on the line for his fellow citizens.  I believe that every one of our men in blue protecting Kaysville would do the same for each one of us in this room.  Anyone who is willing to give his life to protect mine deserves a safe work environment.
I am pretty sure when I die, I might, be able to fill up a chapel.  The only men and women I know who can fill up an auditorium or a stadium when they are killed in the line of action are our men and women in blue.  They are our heroes.  Our heroes in Kaysville deserve better than what they have now.  ( I also know that our fireman and our military would do the same.  I only mentioned our police officers at the meeting because we were there to get them a new police station. )
Because I was feeling a little empowered I also threw in the following line...This meeting is about people protecting their fellow citizens. It is not about money.
To end it I gave my complete confidence in Mayor Oberg and his leadership for the future of the citizens of Kaysville.
To my surprise a kind fellow from the city council stopped me right in my tracks.  He said he wanted to make a comment to my remarks.  Did the look of sheer terror show on my face?  With all the confidence I could muster I looked straight into his eyes and prayed to the good Lord that I would know how to respond as I was about to wet my pants at the same time.  Would you believe that he told the audience that not only did I have a son serving as a police sargeant but that I also had a son serving as an EMT/firefighter.  He thanked me for raising two sons who would serve their community unselfishly in this manner.
Well, how was I going to respond to that!!!  The only way I could.  I lifted my head a little higher, put my shoulders back a little broader, looked him still straight in the eye and said "Thank you!"  That is how we get it done in K-town.
Thank you Cory Wride for giving me something to think about and the courage to get it out of my mouth.

Along came Maggie......Part 3

The Queen of Fudge

I love so many things about Maggie.  At Christmastime she makes the best fruitcake and fudge.  The first time I tried her fudge I dubbed her The Queen of.......
Maggie won't always be around and neither will I.  I decided it was high time I learned how to make her fudge.  So here is my attempt at Maggie's Fudge and pictures to boot.  I hope.......

These are the  chopped nuts. You will need two cups of these bad boys or if you don't like them, leave them out.

Next you will need to put four and one half cups of sugar and one large can of evaporated milk into a large pan.  Mine was just right, but, barely.  It almost boiled out of the pan.

See how it almost boiled over.  Ewww and yuck my burner is dirty!
After you have boiled and stirred the evaporated milk and sugar for 8 minutes, you pour it over the following ingredients that have been measured into a large bowl:
1.  3 large packages of milk chocolate chips  (11.5 oz.)
2.  2 cubes of butter
3.  1 pint of marshmallow cream
You will want to stir like crazy while moving your hips to These Bruises by Train.  Once you have mixed this thoroughly add 2 tsp. of vanilla.  (Don't forget this important step like I did)  It still tastes yummily delicious however.  Next add your walnuts or not.  Pour into two large cake size pans that have been buttered.  Cool in the buttered pans.  Cut into squares.  Next sample every two to three minutes to make sure you have that yummily delicicious queen of fudge, fudge, taste.

For the record, this is my first attempt at blogging with pictures and I am incredibly proud of myself.  Just sayin!  Til next time when I share another one of my leaves on my tree.

Along came Maggie: part two

The thing I love about Maggie the most is she is a great story teller.  She has taken me as far back in her life as possible.  She always has something new to tell me.
The other thing I really love about Maggie is she hasn't stopped living.  She is slowing down a little but she still has some living in her.  At ninety years old she still drives a car.  She lives alone and completely takes care of herself.  She also has spunk and is a bit feisty.  Oh can she make me laugh without even trying.
Her life hasn't always been easy.  She lost her mother when she was eighteen years old.  She took her two youngest siblings into her home after their mother died.  She worked day and night to keep food in the cupboards and a roof over their heads.  Before, her mother died, she also worked and sent most of her earnings to her mother and father to help them provide for their family.  This was back in the day, like, really back in the day.  She talks about her younger sister and brother as if they were her own children.  When she talks about her parents she refers to them as mama and daddy.  I love it!
The one true blessing Maggie had in her life was Keith.  They were married for a long time but were never able to have children of their own.  They adopted two children.  A daughter Nancy and a son Billy.  I never knew them personally, but, I have heard stories about them.
The saddest story Maggie tells me is about Billy.  He was only sixteen years old when he was hit head on in a collision on Main Street in Kaysville.  He hadn't been driving for very long and was with some friends.  None of them had on seat belts, because, we didn't have seat belts back in the day. To this day when Maggie tells me about Billy it is just like the accident happened yesterday not forty years ago.  Maggie's cute husband Keith never did get over it.
Keith passed away four years ago.  At his funeral many of the same songs that were played on the piano or sang were the same ones played at Billy's funeral.
I will end with the last funny thing Maggie told me that had me rolling.  She was eighty six when Keith died.  Her daughter Nancy asked her if she thought she would ever remarry.  Maggie replied "Heavens no I'm not taking care of no man at my age!" '" Well, if he wants to come and take care of me, well now, that's a different story!"  Pure, spunky Maggie!
Stay tuned for part three of Maggie's story as I try to duplicate the Queen of Fudge, fudge!  See you next time.  LeeLee

Along came Maggie.......

Meet Maggie.  She is one of my oldest leaves (aka)  friends. Anyone can be a friend, but, it takes somebody really special to be a leaf hanging from my tree.
Maggie is the cute 90 year old lady sitting with me in my profile picture.  I met Maggie fourteen years ago, but, I feel like I have known her forever.  She came into my life when my husband was called as a Bishop in our church.  She had lived two blocks away from me for twelve years but I never knew who she was.  However, she is one of those people who once you meet them, you never forget them.
Maggie came to visit me yesterday.  I told her all about my new blog and that she was going to be my feature leaf.  Obviously, she had no idea what I was talking about and was really confused. She was even more confused when three of my boys came by to share their day of school with me.  They were so excited to tell me about their day and Maggie made the mistake of asking them what they were so excited about.  The next thing she heard was how they were coming home from school and a girl was chasing them and calling them chicken butt.  Now she was really confused on how this was all going to turn out.
I love this picture of me with Maggie.  To me, my face and my body language tell it all.  Exactly how I feel about this special leaf of mine.  She has a story and I am going to break it down into a three post mini series.
     Until Sunday, LeeLee

New Beginnings

I have been saying for quite some time that I would like to start a blog.  I have no idea what I am doing, or, if anyone is going to be reading my blog.  I need a creative outlet and I'm ready to give a blog a try.
I have a lot of give-aways on my fb page and I have always told myself that I would have give-aways until everyone who was interested in winning kept trying to win.  Hence, the name of my blog tilthelastleafhasdropped.blogspot.com.
It is my way of saying I will keep giving until the last leaf has fallen.  Funny thing is some trees never loose all of their leaves.  I have noticed this several times on my walks.
If you want to start this adventure with me it is using your own free will.  I am not going to bore anyone who cannot have fun with me.  I love all the seasons winter, spring, summer and fall.
Spring is almost here and with it trees full of blossoms and leaves.  I can hardly wait.  The best time of year for new leaves and new beginnings is almost here!

My new blog. Creating something from nothing. I'm really excited to get going on this.
